Christian Participant’s Guide with DVD: It’s Not What You Think

(11 customer reviews)

What does it mean to be a Christian? Ask 100 people that question and you are likely to get 100 different answers. In Christian, an eight-session DVD Bible study, pastor and bestselling author Andy Stanley explores the one word that Jesus gave his followers that should define them. Includes one Christian DVD and Participant's Guide.

In his eight-session small group bible study, Christian, by Andy Stanley, you’ll examine the characteristics Jesus used to define those who follow him and the implications they have for believers today.

According to Andy Stanley, the words used to describe Christians today often bear no resemblance to what Jesus wanted his followers to be known for.

In Christian, you’ll learn:
– What one word should be descriptive of every Christian
– How Jesus’ followers should treat those who are outside the faith
– Why people love Jesus but can’t stand his followers

What does is mean to be Christian? Curiously, the term is never used in Scripture. Instead, Christian was a label used by outsiders to define Jesus’ followers. Jesus referenced ‘disciple’ as the key word he used to describe his supporters along with the fact that they would be known for their love – a novel concept for their time – and ours today.

Through eight engaging and enlightening small group bible study sessions, Andy Stanley unpacks these qualities Jesus prescribes for his followers that made them unique. What if believers today embodied these traits? Would the non-believing world put aside its definition of ‘Christian’ and instead know us by our love?

This pack contains one DVD and one Participant’s Guide which includes discussion questions for individuals and groups, between session devotions, DVD session overviews, and a helpful leader’s guide. When used together, they provide you with a practical tool that can help grow your faith.

  1. Mark

Excellent sermon series, but not a great group study. As a group leader for some time, I highly value discussion-generating questions as part of the material to get folks actively involved in the study. There’s not a lot of those. I would categorize most of the questions as self-reflection or introspection. The kind of take-home questions you would get with sermon notes in your program/bulletin. In my experience, folks who attend group, particularly new folks, do not like those kinds of questions (at least exclusively) in an open forum. So I felt left on my own to come with discussion material to get them to open up enough to get into the other questions.

I like the accompanying DVD that gives a choice of the sermon in its entirety or a 15 minute snippet to use easily if your group or class time has time constraints. The subject matter is fantastic and one that needs brought up in many churches.

  2. Disciple

This is one of the most powerful and eye opening DVD series I have seen. It is outstanding for those who are seeking God’s truth and for those who are Christ Followers as well. It is outstanding for those who are honest seekers but who have a lot of hang ups about the Church and Christians. It is also challenging for believers who may have gotten away from the essence of the Gospel. Have used it in 2 men’s small groups and the response has been extremely positive. I am getting ready to purchase several copies to give to friends who have an interest but are far from God.

  3. Harried

my study group was made up of new Christians, mature Christians, and long time Christians searching for depth in their faith.

Andy hits is right on! Insightful, funny, thought provoking, all that makes you think.

I would recommend this series to anyone reaching out.

Great study. Really makes you think about who we are supposed to be as followers of God.

  5. Terry

Material makes you think of how you are to love others.

  6. Julie

My small group loves Andy Stanley and we weren’t disappointed. It makes you think and leads to great discussions.

We are presently using this 8 part DVD series with the parents of our Club DJ kids. The idea was to provide an opportunity to explore spiritual matters with a group of “non churched” adults. It took some time to earn their trust first and encourage them to come on into our church building not just to drop off their children but to stay awhile. With coffee and snack in hand they slowly decided to explore this opportunity.

The cool thing is that they really appreciate Andy Stanley’s style, humor and content. Lots of questions and discussion and a wonderful time of getting to know one another.

We also showed the introduction to our regular Sunday attenders and they were also very keen to see more and because we are presently out of a pastor, it has been suggested to run this series as “pulpit supply”.

Andy is a gifted teacher. This is great material for new and seasoned believers.

This is by far the most impressive DVD and discussion series I’ve ever done. There are so many eye opening truths in this series that I want to start it all over again. It is definitely one to return to again and again. The session entitled “Angry Birds” stands out particularly for me. I love this series because all the materials is new to me. Our small group found each session very discussable and I think it helped us learn more about each other. I highly recommend this series.

Hands down, THE best study that I’ve ever done. Andy Stanley’s ‘When Gracie Met Truthy’ and ‘Angry Birds’ were two of the best sermons that I’ve ever seen. Insightful, funny, and right on point. We had GREAT group discussions as Andy gave us lots of stuff to think about. I will forever be asking ‘What does God require of me?’

Our group is made up of mature believers, but I think this series would be excellent for any maturity level. The men in our group were highly engaged in this series as well. We used the 30 minute version of the sessions available on Your Move (

I’ve watched a lot of Andy’s messages over the past couple of years. This is one the best series I’ve seen by him or anyone else. His target audience really is American Christians who have gotten comfortable with rationalizing their lifestyle that looks nothing like what Jesus really called us to. In many ways it is a call for us to re-examine how we view our faith and if we are serious about it, what that means.

Andy is a very dynamic speaker. He is insightful, funny, and captivating. Our group unanimously agreed this is the best study we’ve ever done together.
