Description

What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy?

In this six-session small group Bible study, Sacred Marriage, writer and speaker Gary Thomas invites you to see how God can use marriage as a discipline and a motivation to reflect more of the character of Jesus.

Your marriage is much more than a union between you and your spouse. It is a spiritual discipline ideally suited to help you know God more fully and intimately. Sacred Marriage shifts the focus from marital enrichment to spiritual enrichment in ways that can help you love your mate more. Whether it is delightful or difficult, your marriage can become a doorway to a closer walk with God.

Everything about your marriage—from the history you and your spouse create, to the love you share, to the forgiveness you both offer and seek by turn—is filled with the capacity to help you grow in Christ’s character.

The DVD features six 10-15 minute live teaching vignettes from Gary Thomas. In addition to life-changing insights, you’ll find a wealth of discussion questions in this Participant’s Guide that will spark meaningful conversation in your group, between you and your spouse, or to simply ponder by yourself. You’ll also find self-assessments, activities, and highlights all created to help you engage deeply and prayerfully with the content of this study.

  1. Brian

We just finished this DVD teaching in our Adult SS class which we led, The participant guide was excellent and really enhanced the teaching. The discussion questions were very good. Gary is an outstanding speaker with real warmth and sincerity. We highly recommend “Sacred Marriage” DVD along with the guide.

  2. Karen

We are using this along with the DVD in our small group couples Bible study. So far it’s been great. Having the participants guide along with the DVD works well when there isn’t a lot of time to prepare.

  3. Paula

Our small women’s Bible study group read the Sacred Marriage book. We enjoyed it and learned so much we decided to complete the DVD study with our husbands. What an excellent study! The participant’s guide allows each couple to work through the main points of the DVD lesson as well as provide exceptional discussion questions, things certain to get a couple not only thinking but acting as well. Would be an excellent premarital workshop piece, but definitely has plenty to offer newlywed through golden anniversary stage relationships as well!

  4. Allison

I personally would give this series a 5 out of 5, but it was not a favorite of my small group. It is based on the premise that the main goal of marriage is not to satisfy myself or please myself, but to grown in grace and spiritual closeness to God through the inevitable friction that occurs when two people come together to do life forever. If you don’t accept the premise – which some in my group did not – it will not be an enjoyable series.

We used this for our couple’s group, but as Allison said, we didn’t love it. I am personally one of the people that wasn’t buying the concept of God designing marriage to make us holy and not happy. That said, this study DID generate great discussion between my husband and I outside of group. It gave both of us a safe forum to say some things that had been brewing for some time. I didn’t find Gary as engaging as people like Andy Stanley and Rick Warren, but who is, right??

  6. Bill

I thought the study was decent. Marriage is a difficult topic with many opinions from the experts on the “right” way to do things, just like raising kids. Overall, I thought he did have some good points about God’s design for marriage and what it means for Christians.

We did the study in our couples small group. I think it is best suited for a group that has been meeting awhile, and has developed good relationships already. Talking about your marriage (good and bad) can be challenging, especially if there are those in the room that do not know each other very well yet.

I do think it helped because it fostered discussion with other couples regarding the things they’ve experienced in their own marriages, and those of their close friends and family.
